"The Mission of the program is to provide a safe learning environment for students, while offering an opportunity for hands-on education and job training in the art of Mass Communications through broadcast, on-line/ internet, photography, print journalism and news literacy. "
Who we are:
Youth Urban Multimedia Association (YUMA) is a year round mass communications mentoring program is for inner-city youth who have an interest in journalism, media technology and photography. We educate and train the youth in mass communications. YUMA provides practical internships in these fields.
YUMA conducts an innovative and unique after-school program for students ages 6 to 17 years that uses media to positively impact at-risk youth. To my knowledge there is no other program quite like this one in the area. The purpose of the program is to provide a safe learning environment for students to learn about the art of Journalism through broadcast, on-line, photography and print.The goal is to help increasenews literacy,enhance communication skills, computer literacy and reading appreciation. Through journalism, students are exposed to cultural appreciation, writing instruction, reading comprehension and extensive public-speaking. Students are encouraged to pursue post-secondary education and receive assistance with college application preparation. Students are also introduced to career opportunities in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations and Advertising; and assisted with resume preparation. Students are provided a light snack and supplied with all course-related materials.

Our participants include a diverse group of youth (ages 6-15) who identify as African American, Latino, Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, and others.
